The International Berkeley Society: Memberships

The International Berkeley Society was founded in 1975 to promote interest in the life and work of the philosopher Bishop George Berkeley. It is open to all who share an interest in the life and works of this many-sided man, and you are cordially invited to become a member of the Sociey. The annual dues are $15 US, renewable on Berkeley's birthday, 12 March.

  • As part of their $15/year membership, supporters receive the regular publication Berkeley Briefs.

  • Members are invited to add a voluntary donation of $5 to support the valued Berkeley library in our Study Center at the Berkeley Museum House in Whitehall

  • Members are also invited to donate any amount to the Society's research fund for translations, book subventions, conferences, and other projects that enhance Berkeley scholarship. Those who donate $10 or more to this fund receive a DVD of "The Dean of Thin Air," an hour-long PBS-produced movie about George Berkeley.

You can join the Society either by registering online or by sending in your dues by surface mail. The online option is easier, especially for members outside the U.S.

  • 1. Join or renew your IBS membership online.

Paying your dues or making donations to the IBS by PayPal has a number of advantages over surface mail:

    • Convenience: simply by clicking on one of the buttons below, you can make your tax-deductible dues payment or donations without having to wait for your check to clear. You do not have to open a PayPal account; you can charge your donated amount to a credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover). After selecting one of three options below, choose the options you want at the PayPal site and your total will automatically be calculated.

    • Cost: you save the expense of envelopes, postage, and a trip to the post office. We no longer accept checks drawn on foreign bank accounts. Note: a small fee ($1 for every $25 donated) will automatically be added to defray on-line transaction costs charged to the IBS.

    • Peace of Mind: with an electronic payment, we have an accurate record of your surface and email addresses. Sometimes surface mail (especially from overseas) is damaged so much that we cannot read return addresses.

    • Security: PayPal handles all online financial transactions. The IBS does not collect any credit card information.

To join or renew your IBS membership online using PayPal, or to make donations and take advantage of specials for IBS members only, fill in the boxes below and click on the PayPal button.

  • 2. To join by sending the IBS a check for your dues and other donations, please send us your name, address, and other information requested on the form below. Information marked with an asterisk (*) is optional. If you have an academic affiliation, you may wish to append it to the bottom of the address field. For ease, you can fill out the form, print this page (retaining a copy for your own reference), and send it to the IBS:

    International Berkeley Society
    Department of Philosophy
    Texas A&M University
    College Station, TX 77843-4237
    U.S.A.

    • Money should be sent in U.S. dollars only (check or cash). It is difficult and expensive for us to process checks in other than American dollars.

    • Because of increased costs, we will no longer accept checks drawn on bank accounts outside the U.S.

    • Dues renewal date each year is Berkeley's birthday, 12 March.

    • Checks should be made payable to the International Berkeley Society. Cash (U.S. currency) is also acceptable.

    • To get the "Dean of Thin Air" DVD by donating $10.00 to the Berkeley Research Fund, you must be a current member of the IBS. Unless requested otherwise, members in North America and Japan will receive disks formatted for DVD players using NTSC standards; disks sent to members in other countries will be formatted using PAL standards.
