Redwood Library

Redwood Library, Rhode Island

Redwood Library, 50 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, Rhode Island.

Redwood Library, which later housed the philosophical society in which Berkeley was active when he lived in Newport. Some sessions of the International Berkeley Society's 1999 conference were held here.

It was established by an eighteenth-century merchant, Mr Abraham Redwood, who made a donation of £500 for the purchase of a collection of useful books, "... having nothing in View but the Good of Mankind". The library was chartered in 1747 and built in 1750 - some time after Berkeley had returned to Britain.
